„This can be done better“

Hans Werner Briese (Harvey)

Painting with light -photography has always been, and still is, the great passion of Hans Werner Briese, photographer, engineer and entrepreneur from Hamburg.
When seeing the muddy studio light in the mid 60’s, the only thought the successful fashion photographer and graduated physics engineer had, was: “We can make it better“. He put his thoughts to action and started developing his first own reflector in the parental shed.
The trick; the light source is on a movable axis in the reflector. The novum conquered the market, since the studio light was suddenly “crunchy“ like sunlight while individually adjustable.

In the course of development the focus reflector was born. Harvey had this unique technique patented and perfected in his own company. His invention soon became an insider´s tip. Until today, Briese lighting is the synonym for high quality and characteristic lighting in the film-and photography sector.
Many famous photographer, such as Joshua Jordan, Alexi Lubomirski, Steven Klein, Russell James, Anton Corbijn or Mario Testino work with Briese.

Also inimitable: The E-Focus – the remote controlled focusing unit, which allows to control several reflectors from the camera position – for an ultimate precision and atmospheric lighting.

The redesign of the Focus 180 and 220, unites 40 years of engineering skill and is referred to as a Masterpiece: the Briese Harvey 180 and 220.
